Ahilyabai Holkar was a prominent ruler of the Holkar dynasty and a devotee of Lord Shiva. She was known for her patronage of art, culture, and the reconstruction of various Hindu temples, including the Kashi Viswanath Temple.

Throughout history, several rulers, religious leaders, and devotees have contributed to the maintenance, renovation, and expansion of the temple complex. The temple has undergone multiple renovations and rebuilding efforts due to damage caused by foreign invasions and natural calamities. The present-day structure is the result of various restorations and reconstructions carried out by different individuals and groups over the centuries.
