Indira Ekadashi Vrata Katha.

Indira Ekadashi is one of the most significant Ekadashi fasts in the Hindu calendar, observed during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Ashwin. The fast is primarily dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is believed to liberate the souls of ancestors from the cycle of rebirth, granting them moksha (salvation). The vrata (vow) holds a special place because, according to Hindu beliefs, it is not only beneficial for the devotee but also for their deceased ancestors, helping them attain peace and salvation.

The Katha (story) of Indira Ekadashi is narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhishthira in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana. According to the legend, a virtuous king named Indrasena ruled over Mahishmati and was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. One day, the great sage Narada visited Yamaloka (the abode of Lord Yama, the god of death) and discovered that Indrasena’s father was suffering in the afterlife due to his past sins. Concerned about his father's plight, Narada approached King Indrasena and advised him to observe the Indira Ekadashi fast to relieve his father's soul from suffering.

Following Narada’s guidance, King Indrasena observed the fast with full devotion. As a result, Lord Vishnu, pleased with his devotion, liberated the king’s father from his past karmic bonds and granted him entry into Vaikuntha (Lord Vishnu's divine abode). The fast not only redeemed his father's soul but also brought immense spiritual benefits to Indrasena himself, securing his place in the afterlife as well.

Thus, the Indira Ekadashi vrata is observed by devotees with the belief that it helps in clearing the sins of one's ancestors and ensures peace for their souls. Fasting, praying to Lord Vishnu, and offering food and donations to the needy are some of the key practices followed on this day. The spiritual significance of this Ekadashi lies in its power to bring salvation to the ancestors, as well as blessings of prosperity, health, and happiness for the devotee.
