Jaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha.

Jaya Ekadashi is a significant fasting day observed on the eleventh day (Ekadashi) of the waxing moon (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Magha (January-February). This sacred day is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and it is believed that observing a fast on Jaya Ekadashi can free devotees from pas t sins and grant them a place in Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu’s abode. The significance of Jaya Ekadashi is mentioned in the Padma Purana, where Lord Krishna narrates its story to Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava.

According to the legend, in the celestial kingdom of Indra, there was a famous festival where Gandharvas (heavenly musicians) performed for the king of gods. One Gandharva named Malyavan was among the performers, and his beautiful wife, Pushpavati, was also present. However, distracted by their love for each other, Malyavan failed to sing properly, which angered Indra. As a punishment, he cursed both Malyavan and Pushpavati to be born as ghosts (Bhoot) on Earth, condemning them to a life of suffering and misery in a dark and terrifying realm.

Wandering in their ghostly form, Malyavan and Pushpavati endured immense pain and hunger. One day, unknowingly, they observed the fast of Jaya Ekadashi by abstaining from food and engaging in prayer. Due to the great merit of this Ekadashi, their sins were washed away, and Lord Vishnu blessed them by restoring their divine form and granting them a place back in Indra’s kingdom. Their redemption proved the immense power of Jaya Ekadashi in liberating even the most cursed beings.

This story emphasizes the importance of devotion and fasting on Jaya Ekadashi. It teaches that sincere observance of this vrat (fast) not only brings spiritual purification but also grants liberation from past karma and sufferings. Devotees believe that by observing this Ekadashi, one can attain peace, prosperity, and divine blessings from Lord Vishnu, ultimately paving the way for moksha (liberation).
